Tuktoyaktuk and Mackenzie Valley Highway Tour

 Service Description

Travel the brand new Mackenzie Valley Highway from Inuvik to the coastal community of Tuktoyaktuk on the brand new and only highway to the Arctic Ocean. Your local guide will share stories and history of the area, pointing out local landmarks and other points of interest including the Lady of Lourdes Schooner, Traditional Sod House, local Churches, Distant Early Warning Site, Trans Canada Trailhead site. After your Tuk tour, you will receive a cultural tasting where you get to try locally sourced food, and you will have some time to explore Tuktoyaktuk by foot, enjoying everything the Hamlet has to offer. After 4-5 in Tuktoyaktuk you will return down the Mackenzie Valley Highway back to Inuvik. 

UPGRADE OPTION TO VISIT A TRADITIONAL WHALE CAMP:

WHALE CAMP TOUR (Upgrade 4-5 hours)

After a 30 minute tour of the Arctic Coastal community of Tuktoyaktuk where you will learn the history and culture of the Western Arctic Inuit people, visit a traditional sod house, the monument marking the end of the Trans Canada trail, and the fascinating pingos, you will climb aboard our boat! Take an hour long journey on the Arctic Ocean with your local guide, travelling along the water trails of our ancestors. You will pass by pingos and have an opportunity to view ocean birds and hopefully beluga whales along the way! After arriving at our traditional Whaling Camp, where you get a rare glimpse of centuries old traditions, you can enjoy a taste of locally harvested food from the land and sea, while your host shares knowledge of life on the land, then and now. You will take a tour through the whale camp and hear stories from days gone by, as well as how whale, caribou and fish are harvested, prepared and preserved. You might try your hand making dry fish, as well as learning about traditional tools, practices and the clothing of the Inuit people. An hour long boat ride takes you back across the Arctic Ocean trails to Tuktoyaktuk offering a second chance to spot beluga whales, and wrapping up this chance of a lifetime tour!

Leave the Tundra North Tours Office at 8:00am and depart down the brand new Mackenzie Valley Highway. You will drive down this geographically stunning roadway for 3 hours before reaching Tuktoyaktuk and the Arctic Ocean. Once you reach Tuktoyaktuk you will have a 2 hour town tour, and before departing back down the highway to Inuvik.

 

NOTE: In the summer the tour has an additional 2 hours in Tuktoyaktuk to walk around and enjoy the local Hamlet at your own leisure.  

 

Camera, Warm clothes, a bottle of water or a warm beverage and a snack and lunch is suggested.
